The SUM College of Teacher Education in Muzhapala recently hosted an enlightening session titled “The Art of Communication Through Sign Language” in the college auditorium. The workshop aimed to educate attendees on the nuances and importance of sign language in effective communication. The session featured Mr. M.K. Haridasan, a distinguished special educator and assistant professor with expertise in special education. His extensive experience and knowledge in the field brought significant insights into the practice and implementation of sign language as a communication tool. Mr. Haridasan began by providing a comprehensive overview of sign language, highlighting its history, development, and significance in bridging communication gaps for the hearing impaired. Attendees were engaged through practical demonstrations of common signs and gestures used in everyday communication. This hands-on approach helped participants grasp the basic skills required for effective sign language communication. The session included interactive activities where participants practiced signing in pairs and small groups, ensuring that attendees could apply what they learned in real-time, fostering a deeper understanding and retention of the material. A dedicated question-and-answer segment allowed participants to address their queries and concerns directly to Mr. Haridasan, which was particularly beneficial for educators and students aspiring to specialize in special education. The workshop concluded with a note of appreciation from the organizers, who emphasized the importance of such educational sessions in promoting inclusivity and accessibility in communication. The event was well-received, with attendees expressing their gratitude for the valuable insights and practical knowledge gained. This session not only enhanced the participants’ understanding of sign language but also highlighted the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment.
